The valley is divided in terms of territory, between Bari, Brindisi and Taranto and lies in a favorable position between Locorotondo and Martina Franca.

Its gentle landscape is covered with "Trulli", the supreme expression of peasant architecture. The plain abounding with short-stemmed vines is dominated by the hills on which are situated Locorotondo, Martina Franca, CIsternino, Ostuni. The area is rich of oak sapling, grouped into small thickets, and fruit trees and blackberry bushes crowd together between the dry stone walls dividing the fields. The landscape of this area on of the zones which links The Ionian to the Adriatic, is a gentle one, its low-lying hills stretching out against a horizon free of any higher peaks, immersed in the tranquility of the nature, exquisitely beautiful despite its lack of dramatic effect. The wide pastures covering the hills and plain are full of large farms rearing horses and donkeys.
Locorotondo, along with Martina Franca and Cisternino, overlooks the valley Of Itria a fertile cast depression densely populated and dotted with a group of Trulli..
The town was built on a circular plane, its narrow concentric radial streets lined with white terraced houses.

Trulli country, and the old town which has been decreed a national monument ( and Unesco Heritage) is an important tourist attraction. The old centre is entirely made up of Trulli, a fairytale scene which never fails to enchant visitor of this part of the region.
The town’s name derives from the Latin, Sylva Arboris Belli ( wood from the tree of war) after an oak wood which once lay nearby. It seems to have a been founded in the XV century by the Acquaviva family, the Counts of Conversano; but, it was only from the 1635 that the town really began to develop, under the influence of the news Count, “the squint-eyed”.
